What is CBT/DBT

At Gaining Perspective Counseling, we specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a therapeutic method where individuals delve into their thoughts, emotions, and actions, examining how each influences the others. We believe that one’s perception of events, rather than the events themselves, shapes their feelings and behaviors.

Additionally, we offer Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), a variant of CBT developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. DBT concentrates on helping individuals identify ineffective strategies in behavior and relationships. Our approach focuses on cultivating skills in four key areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

First Session: Diagnostic Assessment – This initial meeting with Gary is your opportunity to share all relevant details and information about the symptoms or issues you’re facing. Gary will use this time to get to know you better and begin building a therapeutic alliance.

Second Session: Overview of CBT/DBT Core Concepts – Gary will explain the fundamental principles and science behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in an accessible way. Drawing from your shared information, he’ll help you relate these concepts to your own experiences, laying the groundwork for identifying areas of focus in your treatment plan.

Third Session & Beyond: Treatment Planning, Continuous Assessment, & Engagement – Building on the insights gained from the previous sessions, Gary will collaborate with you to prioritize areas for focus in your treatment plan. Together, you’ll explore any topics or concerns you wish to address, with Gary’s guidance to support your healing journey.
